Galeria Militar is an artist activated gallery located in the Pueblo Magico of Todos Santos, in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Established as a place to share ideas around the creative process while exhibiting and selling fine art from local and International Artists in its Mexican-industrial aesthetic exhibition space.
On Thursday March 11, Destino Los Cabos was invited to the grand opening of the first annual show by Galeria Militar featuring work by Christa Assad. Owned and operated by Painter/Musician Mark Gabriel and his partner Jessie Wallace, who is also a Photographer/Filmmaker, Galeria Militar is elevating the art scene in Todos Santos and offering new inspired events and concepts during a time when most of the events in the area have shuttered due to the pandemic. In 2020, the gallery broadened its mission planning a new season of exhibitions, featuring both local residents of Todos Santos as well as inviting international artists to be discovered. The relaunch of the gallery showcased a new series by Gabriel featuring socialites of the tropical jet-set which he started working on in the early days of 2020, but that has since acquired an additional layer of meaning due to the global pandemic.
The gallery is known for being active in the community and regularly hosting fundraising events, but this year they needed to get creative. By scheduling hour-long time slots throughout the evening, Mark and Jessie were able to control the flow of people and obey all COVID-19 protocols, while still executing a fun and successful event! They also have a virtual show and 3D walk through available on their website at: https://www.galeriamilitar.com/silenceconscent for those who cannot make it in person. The gallery itself is expertly divided in two; one half features art by rotating guest artists, while the other side acts as Mark’s personal studio and showcase of his work. The event included music performed by Myrna Trasvina, who put on an intimate show in the courtyard with music dedicated to the stories of women’s struggle and the progress we’ve made. Myrna has dedicated her life to music and art – inspired by her grandmother who was never allowed to sing and perform in public. The event also featured cocktails and delicious traditional bites like ceviche and sopas prepared by neighboring restaurant El Refugio.
In the first of their series of local artists, Christa Assad presented a colorful series telling the stories of women from Mexico, past and present. One of the women she featured was respected local farmer La Dona Michala Cota, who attended the opening with her family to see the unveiling of the original painting Assad created in her honor. The Assad x Wickham show runs until April 12. View downloadable catalog HERE.
