In the heart of La Paz, Baja California Sur, a unique cultural treasure redefines how locals and visitors experience one of the world’s most beloved beverages: tea. REVU, La Paz’s first tea house, opened in January 2023 and has become a haven for tea enthusiasts and cultural explorers. This innovative tea house is the creation of Graciela Ríos, a Doctor of Administrative Sciences with over 25 years of professional experience and a lifelong passion for tea.
A Passion for Tea and Global Traditions
Graciela’s journey toward founding REVU began with her fascination with the tea ceremonies of China and Japan, the sophistication of English tea culture, and the artistry of European and Oriental teaware. Over the years, she traveled extensively, visiting tea houses around the world and deepening her knowledge of tea cultivation, production, and trade.
With deep roots in La Paz, where her family has lived for more than four generations, Graciela envisioned REVU as a space to share her love for tea and its cultural significance. Today, REVU offers not only the world’s finest teas but also an educational and cultural experience.
The REVU Experience: More Than Just Tea
REVU goes beyond serving tea; it offers a curated cultural experience. Some of the highlights include:
- Afternoon English Tea: A classic British ritual now available in La Paz.
- Monthly Tea Tastings: Explore tea varieties from different countries, paired with homemade pastries crafted from local ingredients.
- Special Events: From celebrating International Tea Day to honoring Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to La Paz in 1983, REVU organizes events that blend history, culture, and tradition.
Overcoming Challenges to Build a Landmark in La Paz
Introducing authentic tea culture to Mexico wasn’t easy. Many locals are more familiar with herbal infusions or bubble teas. Graciela made it her mission to educate her community about Camellia sinensis, the true tea plant, and its distinct qualities. Her efforts have paid off—REVU is now a must-visit destination in La Paz, attracting tea lovers and tourists from around the world.
One of Graciela’s proudest accomplishments is the homemade production of all pastries and snacks served at REVU. The focus on organic, gourmet offerings has established REVU as a premium location for tea and culinary excellence.
Supporting Local Communities and Sustainable Practices
REVU is more than a business—it’s a force for good in La Paz. By sourcing ingredients from local micro-enterprises, REVU supports the local economy and creates direct and indirect jobs. The tea house also aligns with UN sustainability goals, using direct trade channels to connect with small tea producers globally, many of whom are women.
REVU’s Bright Future
As REVU approaches its second anniversary, Graciela is looking to expand her vision. In November 2024, the tea house hosted “The Queen’s Tasting,” a special event celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s tea traditions. Additionally, Graciela plans to bring tea culture to nearby cities like Todos Santos and Cabo San Lucas, extending the reach of REVU and enriching more communities with tea traditions.
For Graciela Ríos, REVU isn’t just a tea house—it’s a celebration of history, tradition, and human connection. As La Paz’s first tea house, it continues to thrive as a beacon of culture, education, and sustainability, one sip at a time.
