The 5th Los Cabos International Film Festival announces its World Highlights and American Specials sections, which include Mexican Premieres of Woody Allen’s CAFÉ SOCIETY, Garth Davis’s LION, Ewan McGregor’s AMERICAN PASTORAL, Babak Anvari’s UNDER THE SHADOW, and more. Los Cabos International Film Festival, which will host its fifth edition on November 9th to 13th, announces the titles that constitute two of its most awaited sections: World Highlights, a carefully curated selection of international films that have been selected in the main film festivals from around the world; and American Specials, which includes featured American films that have stood out both in the critic eye and in the box-office.     Garth Davis presents the Latin American Premiere of his celebrated cinematographic debut LION (Australia-Great Britain-USA), which follows the story of a young Indian who undertakes a tireless search of his biological family after 25 years of a separation that occurred after getting lost in the streets of Calcuta as a child. This film –based on a true story– stars Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara and Dev Patel.     We also have the Mexican Premiere of UNDER THE SHADOW (Great Britain-Jordan-Qatar-Iran), directed by Babak Anvari, which tells the story of a mother and a daughter who have to face a mysterious curse in the 1980s Tehran. The film’s been acclaimed by international critique and it’s become Great Britain’s contender for the 2017 Academy Awards.     Klebeer Mendonça Filho’s AQUARIUS (Brazil-France) joins our World Highlights for its Mexican premiere. The film tells the story of a 65-year-old widow played by Sonia Braga whose routine is abruptly interrupted by a company that’s looking to demolish her house. The featured premiered as part of the Official Selection of the Cannes International Film Festival, and was also presented at the Toronto International Film Festival.     DEATH IN SARAJEVO (Bosnia and Herzegovina) will have its Latin American premiere at the festival. The feature takes place in a hotel in downtown Sarajevo, which is the scenario for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s murder. With a touch of dark humor, the master Danis Tanovic brings us closer to the sociopolitical conflict that remains present in Bosnia-Herzegovina to date. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. It’s also the Serbian contender for the 2017 Academy Awards.     Among our World Highlights, we stand out Academy Award winner Michael Dudok’s awaited debut as a director, THE RED TURTLE (Japan-France-Belgium): an animated film produced by Studio Ghibli and Wild Bunch, which tells a story about loneliness, love, and the magic between a castaway and a turtle. This silent film won this year’s Un certain regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.     Last but not least, Taika Waititi‘s THE HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE tells the tale of two people with emotional rough edges, who are forced to work out their issues during a long and involuntary day trip in the forest. The film was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and has been awarded in the Edinburgh Film Festival, the San Francisco Film Festival and the Seattle Film Festival.   AND, The American Specials:   American Specials presents the Mexican Premiere of Woody Allen‘s most recent feature film, CAFÉ SOCIETY (USA). It’s the legendary New York author’s 46th film, which tells the story of a young man who moves to 1930s Los Angeles and falls in love with his talent agent uncle’s assistant. Opening film of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.     The selection also includes the Latin American Premiere of Ewan McGregor’s debut as a director: AMERICAN PASTORAL (USA). The film, which is based on Philip Roth’s homonym novel, brings an extraordinary cast together, starring Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Connelly and McGregor himself, who embodies a legendary athlete whose life takes a turn in the wrong direction when his daughter takes part in an act of political terrorism related with the Vietnam War.     The list also comprises the Mexican Premiere of LITTLE MEN (USA-Greece), directed by acknowledged indie filmmaker Ira Sachs. The feature premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and it tells the story of two teenage friends who defend the friendship and solidarity bond that brings them together, in spite of the conflict between their families. The cast includes Alfred Molina and Greg Kinnear.     Last but not least, the Mexican premiere of Chad Hartigan’s MORRIS FROM AMERICA (USA) joins the list. This film shows the spectator what discovering love looks like through the eyes of a 13-year-old African American kid who moves to Germany with his dad, where he tries to adapt to his new reality.
