The first week of April 2019, Los Cabos will be buzzing with internationally renowned artists and patrons of the art, in town to experience the phenomenal Gala de Danza dance performance. For the sixth consecutive year, Gala de Danza will bring a rich cultural and artistic experience for the events on April 4-6 at Viceroy Los Cabos in San Jose del Cabo.
Since the summer of 2013, Gala de Danza has brought together artists from around the world to help enrich the lives of young dancers and the community. Under the leadership of Gala de Danza founder and former ballerina Christina Lyon, dancers, choreographers and musicians from 20 different countries, have shared their talents in Los Cabos, and continue to return each year for this world-class performing arts experience.
Some of this year’s talented performers include Derek Hough (Emmy Award Winning choreographer, Dancing with the Stars), Sammy Hagar (Grammy Award Winner & Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Legend), David Lomelí (Placido Domingo’s protégé and gifted tenor), Jorge Viladoms (concert pianist and GQ’s Musician of the Year), Josie Walsh (Artistic Director of BalletRED and Joffrey Ballet School Los Angeles & San Francisco), Misty Copeland (principal with American Ballet Theatre), Ekaterina Kondaurova (principal with Mariinsky Ballet), Daniel Ulbricht (principal with New York City Ballet), Yulia Zagoruychenko & Riccardo Cocchi (Six-Time World Latin Ballroom Champions) and Youth America Grand Prix finalists, just to name a few.
The Gala is not only intended to thrill ticket-holders who attend the events at Viceroy Los Cabo, but throughout the year Gala de Danza is dedicated to improving the lives of talented youth in the community through a partnership with local studio Danza Tellez. Known as Danza Que Da Esperanza, this program offers scholarships that include academic and artistic training for talented children from underserved communities in Baja California Sur. This year there are 21 students enrolled. These students receive high-quality dance instruction at Studio Tellez, transportation, meals, academic tutoring, school supplies, and uniforms for both dance and school.
Thanks to the vision of Christina Lyon and Lourdes Tellez, these children not only have the opportunity to experience live performing arts by internationally renowned artists – a rarity in Los Cabos; many of them will have the opportunity to perform on stage alongside the ‘super stars’! As each year passes, these young Mexican students have talented peers who have become professional artists to help inspire them.
In fact, one of the first students in the Danza Que Da Esperanza program, Andres Zuniga, attended the first Gala performance and courageously stated that he would like to dance in the Gala the next year. This year Andres is dancing in the Gala for the fourth time, as a professional dancer with the New York City Ballet!
In addition to the talent, the venue – Viceroy Los Cabos – is itself a work of art to behold. “It’s like the venue was made for Gala de Danza and Gala de Danza for it,” says Laura Alfaro, the Gala executive director.
